Tantra for the Novice

Tantra was a spiritual movement originating in northern India in the 9th and 12th centuries. In the West,Tantra is associated with sex, which is but one small aspect of Tantric wisdom. Tantra involves harnessing that divine spark felt during sex, harnessing it and transmuting it into all aspects of your life. In tantra, we set regular intentions and practice on a daily basis.

Isolation In Modern Society. First off, every human being needs to be touched. The fact that we are tribal creatures is imprinted in our DNA. In ancient times, we lived, breathed and died in the embrace of the family hug as we were intertwined. Hugging and touching both teaches and nourishes us as it opens us to the Cosmos. It’s how we radiate and feel the familial connection to the constellations. Now separated, we are segregated, starved, having lost our sixth sense.

Technology provides a false version of the sixth sense, wherein we think we are connected but aren’t. The visceral, sensual loving that humans need to feel healthy is not around; which us why inflammation is so high. Our diet is not always at fault; rather, we are deficient in oxytocin. We no longer breathe together and witness infants born as before into tribes. We fear death as most of us are rarely privy to it. If we all dwelt in a community environment, we would not be so frightened to the core about life and death matters. As we are utterly deficient in oxytocin, the other neurotransmitters dwindle and our hormones begin to fail. Sex then becomes the end all, which puts tremendous pressure on us. If we actively hug and touch on a daily basis, then sex just morphs into an extension of that. The oxytocin deficit puts us in constant fight or flight mode so we are unable to connect at all.

Easy Practice for a Tantric Novice

In tantra, the most profound tenet is to see everything for the first time, every time. This is the ideal place to start so open yourself to seeing and experiencing everything for the first time, stepping immediately into a realm of intimacy that transcends space and time. Start to see for yourself that love and truly nourishing connection abound in each moment, no matter where you are. Did you spend quality uninterrupted time with your beloved the last time you were together? Do you see and feel who they are today, not who you have known them to be leading up to this encounter? Your spirit is deeply nourished when you are willingly intimate in each encounter, even when the one you encounter is yourself. Your heart will open when you do this, and your sensual energy will generously flow. Suddenly, all life seems to transform into an exquisite lovemaking session, constantly flowing throughout your being.

9 Tantric Rasas (States of Being)

In Tantra, these 9 Rasas are the essence of all our emotions.

  1. Love/Sringara. It is the ultimate Rasa, the regal emotion that heals all. Freeing the ego, it connects you to devotion. When you appreciate beauty, it connects you to Source. It is the creative play between Shiva and Shakti, sun and moon, yin and yang. Your cosmic purpose is to experience this divine love. This love exists in all, within you and radiates out to the Cosmos.
  2. Joy/Hasya. This Rasa connects you to joy, humour, laughter and contentment, an extension of what you feel within love.
  3. Wonder/Adhuta. Curiosity, Mystery, Awe. When you become fascinated with the magic of life, your playful innocence kicks in. You become a fully appreciative adventurer.
  4. Courage/Vira. Bravery, Confidence, Pride. When you call upon your the Warrior that lives inside you. It is strong and vibrant.
  5. Peace/Shanta. Deep calmness and relaxation. When you become still and quiet. In peace, you become so full that you are empty. You can only find peace within.
  6. Sadness/Karuna. When you can experience sadness and connect it back to the Cosmos, you then experience compassion. Compassion is what connects us all. Through compassion, we can relate deeply to each other. When your sadness is truly experienced around a situation, it affords a sense of completion. Grief is a key component in healing.
  7. Anger/Raudra. In anger we go into the fire. One moment of anger can destroy lifetimes of good merit. Respect anger. When anger isn’t honored it can bring up irritation, violence, hatred. Feel the anger. Let it move through you. Breath into the fire.
  8. Fear/Bhayanaka. Doubt, Worry, Insecurity. When you live in fear, you shut down completely.
  9. Disgust/Vibhasta. Self pity, Loathing, self hatred. Only through a loving emotion can you ever heal and appease feelings of disgust.

How To Practice Tantra

  • Start right now, wherever you are. While many Tantric meditations and practices require you to sit silently in a quiet place, Tantra is basically about engaging with life just as it is. Wherever you are is the ideal place to be, just as you are.
  • Even 3-10 seconds works. While it helps to have an hour or more to devote to your practice, finding time is the greatest hurdle to starting. Renowned Tantric Master Daniel Odier urges students to engage in short, 3-15 second, practice sessions to get over the time hurdle. Such frequent micro-practice sessions an prove more effective than one long session.
  • Scan your body. Give yourself a few minutes to mentally scan your body and notice how you feel. Where do you feel relaxed? Where do you feel tension? Take your time. Meet your body and how it feels with acceptance and compassion. Each sensation is a springboard for exploring the life hidden in this life without exception.
  • Choose one sensation and focus. While scanning your body, you may have noticed a sensation that somehow intrigued you. Focus your attention there. Get closer, feel more. Imagine yourself climbing inside that sensation to get even closer.
  • Go deeper. You may be holding tension you were unaware of;allow yourself to relax. Steadily soften the muscles around the sensation, until your entire body relaxes, nose to toes.
  • Notice. What do you notice about the sensation now that tension has been released? How does your body feel? How do you feel in general? Scan your body again. What else do you notice?
  • Start again. In the tantric practice, a spiral of concentric circles often occurs, plunging deeper and deeper as more is revealed. Now that you are in closer contact with the sensation that first captured your attention, get even closer. What happens when you feel within the feeling now? What happens when you release deeper layers of physical and mental tension?
  • Deeply receive. When you feel complete, take time to slowly absorb whatever you have discovered in your practice. Let go, sink into your body and supports beneath you. Breathe deeply and savour the life hidden within this one.

Creation Mantras

Creation Mantra from the Male Perspective

I was mediating naked in the darkness of the night.
I closed my eyes and dissolved in the void between time and space.
I became pure energy in the silver of Shiva’s lingam.

Deva Shiva and Devi Shakti began their dance of creation.
They embraced in divine yab-yum.
His wand of light lovingly entered her divine passage.
God and Goddess closed their eyes.

I was hurtled on a silver beam into the recesses of her divine womb.
A smile appeared on Devi Shakti’s face.
In an instant she conceived me as her newest creation.
A wave of nectar carried me gently down her divine yoni.

I was reborn among the stars and planets of the cosmos.
I opened my eyes. I had become a child of Tantra.
Namaste, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti,
